OsteoCHAMPS Beginnings
OsteoCHAMPS was founded in 2000 by Margaret I. Aguwa, D.O., Professor and Associate Dean for Community Outreach and Clinical Research at the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. Click here to view an article featuring Dr. Aguwa.

OsteoCHAMPS Summer PREcollege Enrichment Program (PREP)
PREP is a two-week intensive residential program held in July on the MSU campus for selected students who will be entering the 11th or 12th grade in the fall. The program includes instruction in pre-college science curriculum as well as non-academic enrichment services and activities, including:

- Anatomy, Chemistry, Physics, Physiology
- Mathematics and Writing
- Learning and Test-Taking Skills
- Research Projects

- Introduction to Osteopathic Medicine and Other Health Sciences
- Physical Examination Skills Demonstration
- Community Service Activities

Social activities focus on providing interaction with health professionals, MSUCOM students (Big Sibs), MSU 4-H Community Services, and participants from other communities.
Who is Eligible to Apply for OsteoCHAMPS?
To be considered for acceptance by MSU, an applicant must be entering the 11th or 12th grade in the fall of the next adademic year (2012/13). [Students in the 10th or 11th grade in the current (2011/12) academic year]
Foundation Scholarships
The Osteopathic Foundation of West Michigan began sponsoring area high school students in 2001 by providing full ($2,000) scholarships. Since then, the Foundation has provided these scholarships to 156 students ($312,000 total), including 13 current (2011/12) OsteoCHAMPS who participated in MSU's July, 2011, program. In order to be considered for an Osteopathic Foundation scholarship, an application must be submitted. The new (2012) eligibility information and application form will be available in early February via our website. The deadline to submit an application is April 13, 2012. (See How to Apply)
Who is Eligible to Receive a Scholarship Through the Foundation?
In order to be considered for a scholarship through the Osteopathic Foundation, students must:
- Be entering the 11th or 12th grade in the fall of 2012 at a West Michigan area school (within the counties of Muskegon, Ottawa, or Oceana).
- Pledge to abide by all rules and regulations of Michigan State University, The Housing Facility, and the OsteoCHAMPS program.
- Meet the federal guidelines for Educationally Disadvantaged and/or Economically Disadvantaged in order to be considered for financial sponsorship.
- Submit the application and all required documents to the Osteopathic Foundation of West Michigan on or before the application deadline (April 13, 2012).
Eligibility Exception:
OsteoCHAMPS, under the auspices of MSUCOM, may open a few positions to students who do not meet the Educationally and/or Economically Disadvantaged qualifications and who are willing to pay their own tuition of $2,000. MSU Extension Office - Programs & Activities
The Muskegon County MSU Extension Office monitors and assists students throughout the academic school year by coordinating meetings and activities to build upon the summer OsteoCHAMPS learning experience. Participation by current OsteoCHAMPS is a requirement. Parents/guardians and friends are more than welcome to attend!

College Tuition Scholarships
In addition to providing full scholarships to attend the OsteoCHAMPS summer program at MSU, the Foundation also awards $500 college tuition scholarships to graduating high school seniors who were sponsored by the Foundation (received the $2,000 scholarship) and then participated in the OsteoCHAMPS program throughout the academic year. Sixteen college tuition scholarships were awarded in 2011.
