	<title>What's a D.O.?</title>
	<link>http://www.osteopathicfoundation.org/pg/Whats_a_DO/whats_a_do.html</link>
<description>If you&apos;re like most people, you&apos;ve been going to a physician ever since you were born and perhaps were not aware whether you were seeing a D.O. (osteopathic physician) or an M.D. (allopathic physician). You may not even be aware that there are two types of complete physicians in the United States.

The fact is that both D.O.s and M.D.s are fully qualified physicians licensed to prescribe medication and perform surgery. Is there any difference between these two kinds of physicians? Yes and no.
D.O.s and M.D.s are alike in many ways:

Applicants to both D.O. and M.D. medical colleges typically have four-year undergraduate degrees with an emphasis on scientific courses.
Both D.O.s and M.D.s complete four years of basic medical education.
After medical school, both D.O.s and M.D.s obtain graduate medical education through such programs as internships and residencies. This training typically lasts three to six years and prepares D.O.s and M.D.s to practice a specialty.
Both D.O.s and M.D.s can choose to practice in any specialty area of medicine-such as pediatrics, family practice, psychiatry, surgery or obstetrics.
D.O.s and M.D.s must pass comparable examinations to obtain state licenses.
D.O.s and M.D.s both practice in fully accredited and licensed health care facilities.
Together, D.O.s and M.D.s enhance the state of health care available in America.

D.O.s, however, belong to a separate yet equal branch of American medical care. It is the ways that D.O.s and M.D.s are different that can bring an extra dimension to your family&apos;s health care.
More Than a Century of Unique Care
Osteopathic medicine is a unique form of American medical care that was started in 1874 by Andrew Taylor Still, M.D., D.O. Dr. Still was dissatisfied with the effectiveness of 19th century medicine. He believed that many of the medications of his day were useless or even harmful. Dr. Still was one of the first in his time to study the attributes of good health so that he could better understand the process of disease.

In response, Dr. Still developed a philosophy of medicine based on ideas that date back to Hippocrates, the father of medicine. That philosophy focuses on the unity of all body parts. Dr. Still identified the musculoskeletal system as a key element of health. He recognized the body&apos;s ability to heal itself and stressed preventive medicine, eating properly, and keeping fit.

Dr. Still pioneered the concept of &amp;quot;wellness&amp;quot; more than 130 years ago. In today&apos;s terms, D.O.s evaluate each patient&apos;s personal health risks, such as smoking, high blood pressure, excessive cholesterol levels, stress, and other lifestyle factors. In coordination with prescribing appropriate medical treatment, osteopathic physicians act as teachers to help patients take more responsibility for their well-being and to change unhealthy patterns.
21st Century, Frontier Medicine
Just as Dr. Still pioneered osteopathic medicine in 1874, today&apos;s osteopathic physicians serve as modern-day medical pioneers.
They continue the tradition of bringing health care to areas of greatest need:

Approximately 65% of practicing osteopathic physicians specialize in primary care areas, such as pediatrics, family practice, obstetrics and gynecology, and internal medicine.
Many D.O.s fill a critical need for physicians by practicing in rural and other medically underserved communities.

Today, osteopathic physicians continue to be on the cutting edge of medicine. D.O.s are able to combine today&apos;s medical technology with their ears, to listen caringly to their patients; their eyes, to see their patients as whole persons; and their hands, to diagnose and treat injury and illness.
D.O.s bring something extra to medicine:

Osteopathic medical schools emphasize training students to be primary care physicians.
D.O.s practice a &amp;quot;whole person&amp;quot; approach to medicine. Instead of just treating specific symptoms or illnesses, they regard your body as an integrated whole.
Osteopathic physicians focus on preventive health care.
D.O.s receive extra training in the musculoskeletal system-your body&apos;s interconnected system of nerves, muscles and bones that make up two-thirds of your body mass. This training provides osteopathic physicians with a better understanding of the ways that an illness or injury in one part of your body can affect another.

Osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) is incorporated into the training and practice of osteopathic physicians. With OMT, osteopathic physicians use their hands to diagnose illness and injury and to encourage your body&apos;s natural tendency toward good health. By combining all other available medical options with OMT, D.O.s offer their patients the most comprehensive care available in medicine today.

            Donating to the Osteopathic Foundation
Your contribution to the Osteopathic Foundation represents an investment in the future. Gifts of all sizes are valued and appreciated! You may specify a purpose for your gift or if you prefer, leave it unrestricted for use where the need is the greatest.
            Outright Gifts
Most people make outright gifts on an annual basis and enjoy being philanthropic throughout their lives. Such outright donations are generally in the form of cash or stock. This provides for immediate impact, and donors receive an income tax deduction in the year the contribution was made.
            Endowments
Endowment gifts are a great way for donors to ensure perpetual support. Annual investment income generated by an endowment fund covers program expenses while the principal remains intact to ensure future funding. Funds established become an enduring symbol of the donor&amp;rsquo;s generosity.
            Planned Giving
Opportunities to make significant charitable gifts occur most often when people make major business, personal, and financial decisions. Planned giving can significantly impact and benefit the community (as well as the donors). Planning for retirement? Receiving a financial windfall? Writing or revising a will? Contemplating the sale of a major asset or a business? Consider a gift to the Osteopathic Foundation of West Michigan.
            Wills &amp;amp; Living Trusts
Charitable bequests are one of the easiest ways to include funds for the future of the Osteopathic Foundation of West Michigan. These bequests can be structured in a variety of ways:

                A specific sum of money
                A percentage of an estate
A percentage of a certain piece of property

There is also an option for donors to designate the Osteopathic Foundation as a &amp;ldquo;contingent beneficiary&amp;rdquo;. Such designation is in the event other named beneficiaries do not outlive the donor. In addition, donors may name the Osteopathic Foundation as a &amp;ldquo;residuary beneficiary&amp;rdquo; for all or a portion of an estate. If you choose to include the Osteopathic Foundation in a Will or Living Trust, please use our full/legal name: &amp;ldquo;Osteopathic Foundation of West Michigan&amp;rdquo;.

<description>A History of Osteopathic Medicine in West Michigan
Muskegon Osteopathic Hospital started as a small private hospital, which was opened in 1942 by a group of 21 Osteopathic physicians and surgeons from Western Michigan.
The group incorporated the hospital as a nonprofit operating organization and purchased an imposing 31-room granite mansion at the corner of Webster Avenue and Third Street in Muskegon. The building, built in the early 1890s by the prominent Muskegon lumberman John Torrent, was one of the community&apos;s showplaces for years.
The establishment of the hospital was sponsored by the Muskegon County Osteopathic Association with the assistance of Dr. Carvel O. Shaffer. The Association placed a down payment of $2,600, in cash, with a land contract of $23,400 for a total purchase price of $26,000; and Dr. Shaffer, Mrs. Hazel Shaffer, and Dr. John Wallace signed the Articles of Incorporation. Muskegon had only a few Osteopathic physicians at this time, but they all donated toward the purchase of the Torrent House. The physicians included Drs. Hiram Nutt, Rubin Berg, Abe VanDyke, Georgia and Russell Riley, Martin Friedenberg and Douglas.
The purchase of the mansion was finalized through Clyde Hendrick Realtors; however, the opening was delayed because the occupant refused to leave. Balbirnie Mortuary operated in the Torrent House and would not leave the premises. The mortuary was eventually evicted, and the opening was accomplished.
The hospital installed 20 hospital beds and various other pieces of equipment totaling $7,500; and on April 19, 1942, the hospital opened its doors. The first patient was George G. Partlow of Ravenna, and the first birth was a boy born to Mr. and Mrs. Claude Johnson of Nunica.
Dr. John Wallace interned at the hospital during its first year of operation. He earned $12.50 a month. In addition to the duties associated with his education and internship, he also served as an x-ray technician, radiologist, laboratory technician, and occasionally as a cook. He remembered serving a lot of &amp;quot;Mrs. Grass&apos; Noodle Soup&amp;quot; on the days he was in charge of the kitchen.
Dr. Wallace also remembered exploring the mansion shortly after the hospital opened. One day, upon opening a large drawer, he found a body. Apparently, the body had been left behind by the former tenant. Mr. Balbirnie retrieved the corpse and prepared it for appropriate interment.
The operating room was located in the old kitchen of the mansion, because it was the only room with tile floors and walls, which made it easier to clean. On one occasion, the oil-fired furnace, located in the room next to the surgery suite, exploded and blew the door down between the two rooms, showering everyone with black soot. Fortunately, the patient suffered no complications.
Staffing the hospital with nurses proved to be a problem. A decree issued in Muskegon stated that &amp;quot;any nurse working at the Osteopathic Hospital would be immediately barred from working at Hackley Hospital and Mercy Hospital.&amp;quot; Another interesting problem occurred as a result of local prejudice when the hospital attempted to secure a street sign, &amp;quot;Quiet, Hospital Zone.&amp;quot; In spite of numerous requests, the City of Muskegon officials refused and would not recognize the facility as a hospital. However, despite some negative feelings in the community, the hospital continued to grow and had a 100%+ occupancy rate much of the time.
On November 18, 1944, as part of a fundraising campaign, a formal dinner costing $1.50 was held at the Occidental Hotel in Muskegon. The price included the meal, a speech by the former Governor of Michigan, Wilbur M. Brucker, and music by a barbershop quartet. The R.S.V.P. was returned to the hospital on a one-cent postcard.
In 1952, the Board of Trustees reported that the facilities were inadequate and took the first steps to expanding the hospital. Negotiations started with the Michigan State Hospital Survey and Construction Committee, and a project was developed, plans were drawn, and a financing study made. In anticipation of future hospital needs, the hospital Board established a building fund. In 1953 the hospital Board purchased the property immediately to the East adjoining the hospital. They obtained a federal grant of $230,000 and negotiated a bank loan of $180,000. This, combined with $115,000 from the hospital&apos;s general funds, $100,000 in contributed building funds, and many additional individual contributions, enabled the project to be launched. Groundbreaking ceremonies were held August 30, 1955, and the project was completed with a ribbon cutting ceremony on February 4, 1957.
The new addition doubled the capacity of the hospital. It added 41 beds, bringing the total to 67 adult beds, 8 pediatric beds, and 10 newborn beds. The new facility consisted of three floors. The first level contained the emergency room, communications center, information desk, central sterilizing, supply rooms, 2 surgery suites and 6 patient rooms containing 17 beds each. The second floor was the obstetrics department including 2 labor rooms, 1 delivery room, and 8 rooms with a total of 24 beds. The sub-floor housed the laboratory, radiology department, cafeteria, and kitchen. The old section of the hospital, the original mansion, contained the administrative offices, pharmacy, medical records, meeting rooms, and maintenance department. There were 25 beds in 10 rooms, including a pediatric department with 8 beds, still in use in the original building. With the addition, there also came improvements to the boiler house and laundry in the back of the hospital. Two gas-fired boilers were installed, each with the capacity to heat the entire hospital as well as an auxiliary electric power plant.
The continuing rapid growth of the greater Muskegon area and a growing medical staff created a greater demand for hospital services, thus motivating additional expansion and the construction of a new hospital building. They selected a site for the new hospital building just east of Interstate Highway 31 and north of Apple Avenue, and purchased it in October, 1962. In February of 1964, the estimated cost of the building was $1.8 million; and by the fall of 1964, predictions were made for a spring start of the 134 bed hospital. The starting date moved in January of 1965 to May and increased the estimate to $2.3 million. Bids were accepted in August and contracts awarded in September, 1965, with the final bids topping $3 million. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on October 5, 1965, and the hospital was re-named Muskegon General Hospital. The building was dedicated on May 29, 1967, and opened to patients on June 1, 1967.
The new hospital anticipated employing 300 persons. The 137-bed facility located on a 20-acre tract had 5 floors and offered the latest in medical, surgical, and therapeutic equipment. In 1967, it was described as &amp;quot;one of the most modern new hospitals in the state.&amp;quot; The new facility included 12 private rooms, 37 semi-private rooms, 10 three-bed wards, and 5 four-bed wards. The supporting services included x-ray, laboratory, pharmacy, nuclear medicine, physical therapy, and inhalation therapy.
Further expansion was completed in 1982. A three-story addition allowed for expansion of the Emergency Department, occupational and physical therapy, ICU and Coronary Care Units, the laboratory, radiology, and nuclear medicine. It also provided for classrooms, administrative office space, and a new Board room.
In 1988, Muskegon General Hospital established the Muskegon General Foundation, primarily for the purpose of providing academic scholarships to Osteopathic medical students
Further expansion took place in 1995 when the Special Delivery Birth Center, a state-of-the-art Labor/Delivery/Recovery/Postpartum unit, was added to the east side of the building.
Two significant activities took place in the mid 1990s. The first was in 1995 when Muskegon General Hospital and Mercy Health Services entered into a Joint Operating Agreement and combined the operations of Mercy Hospital in Muskegon with Muskegon General Hospital. The success of this joint venture led to a decision in 1998 to fully merge the two health care systems. The new health care system was named Mercy General Health Partners.
As part of the merger agreement, the Muskegon General Foundation received $7.5 million from Mercy Health Services to become an autonomous entity. It developed a new mission and changed its name to Muskegon General Osteopathic Foundation, a public charitable foundation. It supported programs designed to produce advances on problems and issues of importance to Osteopathic medicine and the community&apos;s health and welfare.
The former Muskegon General Hospital property was then referred to as the Oak Avenue Campus of Mercy General Health Partners, a part of the nation-wide Trinity Health system.
After 1998 the services, programs and activities of the Foundation expanded much beyond its original role of supporting Muskegon General Hospital and its graduate medical education programs. The Foundation became more regional in its focus. To reflect this change, the Board of the Foundation changed its name to the Osteopathic Foundation of West Michigan in December 2005.
The Osteopathic Foundation of West Michigan is a public charitable foundation which supports programs designed to produce advances on problems and issues of importance to Osteopathic medicine and the regional community&apos;s health and welfare.

	<title>Grants - Application Guidelines</title>
	<link>http://www.osteopathicfoundation.org/pg/Grants/grants__application_guidelines.html</link>
	<description>

            Who May Apply
Requests for support are generally considered from applicants who have been designated as nonprofit, tax-exempt public charities as defined in Sections 501(c)(3) and 170(b) of the Internal Revenue Code. The Foundation generally does not consider requests from private foundations, private operating foundations, and political organizations.
What the Foundation Generally Will Not Fund

Programs outside of the counties of Muskegon, Oceana, Newaygo, and Ottawa
                Routine operating expenses
                Motor vehicles
Religious programs that serve, or appear to serve, specific religious denominations
                Existing obligations or debts/liabilities
                Individuals (except for academic scholarships)
                Grants for endowment
Grants to tax-supported institutions; however, municipalities may apply for a grant for a specific project
Grants to organizations which discriminate based on race, creed, or gender
Grants to conduct political activities, propaganda, influence elections, or to influence legislation

Decision Making Policy and Time Frame
The Osteopathic Foundation Grant &amp;amp; Scholarship Committee reviews grant applications on an annual basis and makes recommendations to the Board of Directors, who is the decision-making body for issuing grants. Interested applicants must submit their completed applications to the Foundation by
            May 1.
            How to Apply
A detailed and completed application should contain the following:

Name and mailing address of tax-exempt organization. Please indicate the individual to whom correspondence should be addressed.
Relationship and capacity or title of person signing the application. Note: Each application must be signed by a principal officer of the organization.
A list of the officers and directors or directors and trustees of the organization.
A brief history of the organization and its principal programs and accomplishments.
A concise and clear description of the project with additional information as appropriate, showing the specific needs and problems, the proposed solution, significance of the project and its expected benefit to the citizens in the Foundation&apos;s geographical service area.
A detailed budget for the project or program for the full term and for the period for which assistance is requested. This should include the total amount to be raised, a list of expected sources of funds, including the amount requested from the Foundation.
A complete explanation of the necessity for the stated amount requested.
A statement of whether aid has been sought during the preceding three years from other Foundations and if so, the names of the Foundations, the amount received from each, if any, and the purposes for each award.

            Additional Required Documentation:

A copy of its current U.S. Treasury and State tax-exempt letter which must include the tax exemption designation and private foundation classification.
A copy of the applicant&apos;s last annual report and certified financial audit of the last annual financial statement. (If the organization does not have an audited report available, please submit an explanation as to why.)
Copy of the organization&apos;s organizing documents (i.e., current Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws or Trust Agreement).

Submit&amp;nbsp;two&amp;nbsp;copies of the grant application and supporting documents to The Osteopathic Foundation of West Michigan, 1700 Clinton St., Muskegon, MI 49442. Deadline: May 1
            The Application Process
Foundation policy discourages unsolicited personal interviews with the Foundation&amp;rsquo;s Board of Directors, collectively or individually, either before or after the filing of an application. If a formal application needs clarification, the Grant &amp;amp; Scholarship Committee and/or the Board of Directors will request it either orally or in writing. If an applicant has questions regarding the application process, the applicant is requested to please contact the Foundation&amp;rsquo;s office.
Any discussions or indication of interest by the Foundation after submission of an application or on-site investigation will not be construed as a commitment by the Foundation in any way. Each application will be considered on its own merit and accepted or rejected only in writing. All applications are given thorough individual study by the Grant &amp;amp; Scholarship Committee and the Board of Directors. If held for further consideration, the program or project is usually investigated by an Officer or one or more Directors. A final decision is reached by discussion and a majority vote of the Board.
            Grant Agreement
All grantees are required to provide the Foundation with an executed Grant Agreement.
(Click here to obtain an example.)
            Resubmission of Applications
The Foundation&apos;s funds will permit it to act favorably on only a small number of the proposals it receives. Consequently, a large number of worthwhile projects may be turned down. If application for the grant is denied, the applicant must wait one year before submitting a new application for the same or similar project.
            Small Grants
For small grant requests of less than $1,000, the Foundation will accept applications at any time. Requests should be directed to the Foundation&amp;rsquo;s office. Applications will be reviewed on a first-come basis and will be funded based on the scope and degree of impact on individuals within the Foundation&amp;rsquo;s geographical service area.
